Music Director Michael Francis leads an evening of storytelling in sound, from American landscapes to the legendary tales of One Thousand and One Nights. Copland’s Appalachian Spring, written for dancer Martha Graham and winner of the Pulitzer Prize, captures the spirit of the American frontier, with its beloved variations on the Shaker hymn “Simple Gifts.” It joins Karen LeFrak’s American Promise on a program that builds to Rimsky-Korsakov’s Scheherazade, a sweeping adventure in which the storyteller spins tales night after night to stay alive. You can hear her voice in violin solos by Concertmaster Jeffrey Multer.
